Justin is the son of mill workers. Both of his parents worked in cotton mills throughout the southeast. He bounced around from small town to small town with them until the age of nine when his father died in a motorcycle accident. From that point on, they stayed put in the small rural town of Marion, South Carolina.
After graduating from high school, Justin enrolled in the Art Institute of Atlanta. He lasted 2 semesters and headed south to Florida to play baseball and flounder aimlessly in school.
When he transferred to University of Florida, he discovered Jack Kerouac. He followed his love of the written word and art and graduated with a liberal arts degree in 2001. After his wife graduated from vet school, they moved to DeLand to settle, had their daughter and adopted their son from Ethiopia.
Justin spent a few years as a stay at home dad, with a brief and unsuccessful stint as a realtor and finally chose to become a substitute teacher. He knew he had found what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. The next year Justin was hired as an art teacher at a local elementary school and have been there now for six years. With the support of his wonderful wife and two beautiful children, he has finally gotten back to doing what he loves - creating art.
Justin is inspired by New Orleans Jazz, Bebop, spontaneity, well written prose, found junk, neutral colors, Wes Anderson movies, Hans Hoffman, Pollock’s courage and anything Peanuts related.
